Botulinum toxin is the most lethal protein known to man. Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic gram positive spore forming rod. C. botulinum and its spores are found widely distributed in nature. There are seven types of C. botulinum based on the form of the toxin they produce. Toxin A, B, E, and F are the only ones that have been associated with causing human botulism. The botulism toxin is a very potent neurotoxin formed during bacterial growth. Only 75ng is enough to kill a person of about 165lbs. A single teaspoon of botulinum toxin is enough to kill about 1.2 billion people. The toxin functions by blocking motor nerve terminals at the neuromuscular junction (see diagram below). Progression of paralysis usually starts with the eyes and face and progresses downward to the throat chest and extremities. Once the diaphragm and the chest muscles become affected respiration is inhibited and without intervention this results in death. There are three common ways that you can get botulism: foodborne botulism, infant botulism, and wound botulism. The first way, ingestion of foods containing the botulism toxins is the most common and occurs after the consumption of improperly processed and inadequately cooked home preserved foods. I like to make my own salsa and when I do I usually make a lot. I preserve the extra salsa I make by canning it. There are several precautions that must be taken to ensure that I don’t kill myself with the deadly food poison botulism. The USDA gives some recommendations that I follow and these include washing food, peeling some fresh food, hot packing (this is basically boiling it before canning), adding acids (lemon juice or vinegar), using appropriate jars and lids, processing jars in boiling water or pressure canner. Key factors to reduce the growth of Clostridium botulinum include pH less than 4.6 and salt concentration from 4 to 5%. The second way to get botulism is Infant botulism. Honey is the one dietary reservoir of Clostridium botulinum that has been linked to infant botulism. If you have ever heard not to give children under 12 months honey this is why. So what do we do with such a potent toxin? Many governments around the world have tried to weaponize botulinum toxin. The U.S. along with several other contries weaponized it in response to suspicions of Nazi Germany’s biological warfare development in 1941. Biological weapons were outlawed in 1972 by the Biological weapons convention but the threat of a possible terrorist use still remains. The FDA has produced a very interesting video on the history of botulinum toxin as a biological warfare agent(see below). So what else can we do with botulinum toxin? The drug BOTOX is actually botulinum toxin type A. It has many uses some of which include: to temporarily smooth frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows), to control severe underarm sweating, strabismus (an eye muscle problem that causes the eyes to turn inward or outward) and blepharospasm (uncontrollable tightening of the eyelid muscles that may cause blinking, squinting, and abnormal eyelid movements) and more. ReplyDeleteAfter reading this, I visited www.botoxcosmetic.com to see what the company has to say regarding the safety of Botox. Problems in speaking and breathing were listed due to the weakening of the muscles around the injection area. People are basically injecting a lethal substance into their face to look younger. With regard to foodborne and infant botulism, I believe the best way of prevention is in educating the public in what preventative measures need to be taken. Following the USDA’s recommendations for cooking and food preservation is important. Knowing what your infant can eat prevents most cases of infant botulism.

ReplyDeleteThe fact one teaspoon of botulinum toxin is enough to kill 1.2 billion people is very disturbing to me. I've always known about the threat with botulism with home-canned goods (the reason I will NEVER buy any from Tannehill)and it's use against wrinkles but I did not know it can be used for other more serious health reasons. I wonder if people knew about the dangers with botulism if they would outweigh the risks with the benefits and still have it injected into their face just to smooth out a few wrinkles..?
ReplyDeleteOnce again, this post was well put together! It's so strange that such a dangerous organism could be such a popular cosmetic tool. I was wondering why it could still be used, so I looked it up and found on google that it is denatured before injected. (They denature the toxin at about 80 degrees C, which I'm assuming is essentially what you are doing by boiling the food before canning.) I do believe that if people put the cosmetic enhances aside, they'd think twice before stuffing their faces with such a harmful organism.
ReplyDeleteYou always here about Botulinum but never the severity of this condition. I never knew the risk of this bacteria until this class and your post and never really thought about the fact taht it could be used as a bioterrisom since it is so dangerous and only takes a small amount to affect humans. I also never knew that this bacteria was used in botox which gives me another reason to never use botox even though ashley did find out that the toxin is denatured.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it seems innocent enough, why would anyone want to inject something into their face, which can kill 1.2 billion people with a single teaspoon? It is really interesting that something so small can cause such a huge problem. My grandmother use to can foods all of the time and I always wondered why we would have to ensure the jars were sealed properly. What a dangerous toxin!
ReplyDeleteI think it is really weird that the government even allows Botox injections for cosmetic purposes knowing the dangers outweigh the benefits. However in some situations, as I have read in another article, Clostridium botulinum can be used in managing muscle pain disorders . The toxin functions by blocking motor nerve terminals at the neuromuscular junction.
ReplyDeleteEven though Ashley said that the organism was denatured before injection, the bacteria form spores which allow them to survive in a dormant state until exposed to conditions that can support their growth. So what if a person was previously injected but was exposed to conditions that allowed the organism to grow.? I feel as that if people knew like how harmful this organism could be that they wouldn't even go through with it. But that's just something to think about.
